How Leaders Make Decisions
Good Decision Making Begins with a Good Value System
What you believe will determine how you make decisions. You may not articulate them regularly. For the most part they remain beneath the surface. But they are constantly at work, guiding you in your decision making process. So you need to stop and take stock of what it is that you believe in the depths of your heart. Here are a few of my core beliefs or values which guide my decision making process.
First, if I put God first in everything then he will direct my path.
Second, people matter to God and should therefore matter to me.
Third, the local church is the hope of the world.
Good Decision Making Depends on Good Advisors
My father gave me this advice years ago as I started out in ministry. He told me to select a set of counselors, coaches, leaders whom I respected. And whenever making a decision he told me to bounce it off of them or to consider how I thought they would handle the situation.
I have a friend who I call whenever I am making a financial decision. I have another friend I call on when the decision has to do with marriage or child rearing because he is about the best husband and father I have ever seen. The Bible says there is wisdom in the counsel of many so surround yourself with rock solid leaders.
Good Decision Making Requires Listening to the Leadings of the Spirit
There is a supernatural dimension to being a spiritual leader that only comes by learning to listen to the Holy Spirit. The Bible says “The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord.” That means that God often illuminates the path we are to follow by prompting us in our spirit. The Holy Spirit comes along and prompts us to move in a certain direction.
Good Decision Making Rest on What God’s Word Says
Always, always go to the word of God when making decisions as a spiritual leader. It's important to base your decisions on a rock solid values system. You need to listen to God counsel. You certainly wasn't too hear the voice of the spirit. But at the end of it all, go with God's word. It'll never fail you.
